The first 39 books of the Bible are called the Old Testament. 12 of those books are called the Minor Prophets (because the books are small). Habakkuk is the eighth of the 12.
The prophet Habakkuk has cried to the Lord to stop the evil wickedness that is running rampant in Israel. God has not answered until now. But God’s answer is not what Habakkuk wants to hear. God is raising up the Chaldeans, a fierce and feared people, to come against Israel. Habakkuk voices his questions over the matter and then waits for the Lord’s response once again.
This time God tells him what the end will be for the nation that comes against Israel—destruction. Yet, in between Habakkuk’s present time and the Chaldean’s future end will come Israel’s judgment at the hands of the Chaldeans. Habakkuk learns to live by faith and waits quietly for the day of distress to come upon him when it comes upon his nation. The purpose of judgment on the living is to cause repentance so that God can restore. Habakkuk understands triumph as he finally trusts in the Lord with security and confidence.
